MIKI, Japan  -- High school student Mao Matsuyama became the youngest winner of the Japan Amateur Golf Championship on Friday at 15 years and 344 days.

He defeated university player Masayuki Yamashita on the second playoff hole after the day's final round was called off due to bad weather, leaving the two tied with a 54-hole total of 7-under 203 at Hirono Golf Club in Miki, Hyogo Prefecture.

The previous youngest record of 17 years and 51 days was set in 2015 by Takumi Kanaya, who turned pro in 2020 and has won six times on the JGTO Tour.

"There were moments my hands were shaking with nervousness. I'm relieved," Matsuyama said. "I was aware (of the chance to break the record). I had been playing well recently and thought now would be the chance to win."
